Founded in 1850 and located on Virginia’s Crooked Road, Independence is a full-service community and the county seat of Grayson County. Situated in scenic Southwest Virginia, Independence serves as the eastern gateway to Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and Grayson Highlands State Park. The New River, with numerous outfitters, flows just adjacent to town. Regardless of the direction one goes from town limits, visitors are afforded a diversity of outdoor recreational opportunities. Independence hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the annual 4th of July celebration and the Mountain Foliage and Grand Privy Races in October.

What’s New in Independence

Buy a Stone, Support Town Park

The Town is creating a new walkway at the Main Street entrance to Town Park and has approximately 50 pavers available for engraving. Each paver is $150 and the net proceeds will go toward getting Town Park open.

The Town is implementing a notification system for water and sewer outages. All residential and commercial users are encouraged to contact Town Hall at 276-773-3703 to provide your preferred contact information. The Town will start using the system April 1st, 2024 to notify residents and businesses of water and sewer issues. We will no longer post this information on social media.

The Town is looking for volunteers to help with Town-sponsored events. We need individuals to help before, during and after the events. This includes 4th of July, Fall Foliage Festival/Privy Races, Safe Halloween and the Christmas Parade.

We are also looking for community members (can be non-Independence residents) to participate on an Event Planning sub-committee.
