Founded in 1850 and located on Virginia’s Crooked Road, Independence is a full-service community and the county seat of Grayson County. Situated in scenic Southwest Virginia, Independence serves as the eastern gateway to Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and Grayson Highlands State Park. The New River, with numerous outfitters, flows just adjacent to town. Regardless of the direction one goes from town limits, visitors are afforded a diversity of outdoor recreational opportunities. Independence hosts a large, regional celebration every July 4th and hosts the annual Mountain Foliage Festival and Grand Privy Races the second Saturday of October.
